Mindful Eating and the Am I Hungry?® Program:

What is Mindful Eating? Mindful eating is a method of eating with intention and attention. When we pay attention to the act of eating, our brains and bodies work in harmony and we intuitively know when we are hungry and when we are satisfied. This changes our relationship to food, improves our health and can ultimately transform our lives.

Hunger is a physical sensation, felt in the body as emptiness, growling, or light headedness, etc. These sensations signal our brains that our bodies need the energy and nutrition derived from food. Food is essential for survival, but when more is taken in than needed, it is stored as fat. Many of us are so disconnected from our bodies that we no longer know how to interpret these signals and often mistake feelings such as boredom, anxiety or other discomfort with the need for fuel. Unable to distinguish whether we are physically hungry or satisfied, we often eat to meet these other needs. Mindful eating teaches us how to distinguish between our need for nourishment and our emotional needs, which can never be satiated with food. We can then meet our emotional needs in more effective ways and avoid eating when we are not physically hungry.

What is Am I Hungry?® (AIH): Am I Hungry?® is an award-winning, non-diet approach to mindful eating that helps you end your struggle with food. Developed by Dr. Michelle May and facilitated by Kay Joyner, both former 'yo-Am I Hungry Eating Cycleyo dieters', this interactive and engaging program teaches you how to mindfully make more effective choices that lead you to a more satisfying and fulfilling life.

You can benefit from this program if you:

  • Struggle with emotional eating, whether or not you're overweight;
  • Are overweight and just can't stop eating and/or start exercising;
  • Are at or near your ideal weight but restrict eating, or exercise excessively, to control your weight;
  • Feel guilty when you eat certain foods and deprived when you don't;
  • Are confused about when, how, or what to eat and don't feel you're functioning optimally.

No matter where you're stuck, AIH can work for you. Our unique approach helps you uncover the root cause of your issues: your thought patterns. You'll learn to identify where you're stuck, as well as the skills and strategies you need to break free. And when that happens, your whole life changes!

What You Will Learn—Here's just a sampling of the things you will learn in this comprehensive program:

  • How to reconnect and trust your body's wisdom;
  • What hunger is, what it isn't and what you can do when the urge to eat is not a physical need for nourishment;
  • How to change your habitual patterns of thinking which are keeping you stuck;
  • How to increase your metabolism and decrease your confusion about nutrition;
  • How to end your love-hate relationship with food and bring pleasure back to eating.
  • How to create a powerful prescription for optimal care of your body, mind, emotions and spirit.

Am I Hungry?® is not designed to treat eating disorders. If you have been diagnosed with, or suspect you have, an eating disorder, please contact a competent therapist before beginning the AIH program.
